Most purchase-intent searches in Tenerife are decided in the first three map results. Whoever shows up there wins the local business. Whoever does not, does not exist. The idea of this challenge is to build something that produces those appearances steadily: a local directory.
Why a directory and not another page
A landing page sells once. A directory compounds: every listing is an indexable page that answers a specific search — “plumber in La Laguna”, “daily menu in Santa Cruz” — and every page is an asset that grows over time.
- Each listing is an independent page with local business schema.
- Long-tail searches add up to more traffic than any generic keyword.
- The business gets visibility, the directory gets links, everyone wins.
The rules we set
- No invented metrics: everything we publish has a screen behind it.
- No mass-generated filler: every listing is hand-curated.
- Monetisation only when there is real traffic. Value first, revenue later.
- If a listing does not help the business, it does not go live.
What the challenge measures
- Rankings: entering the top 3 of key local searches.
- Listing traffic: clicks to the site and calls to listed businesses.
- Adoption: businesses wanting to be listed — or pay to be listed.
The directory pays for itself or dies. That is the real test of the model, and we are documenting it here with open data. The next stop is the first page of the directory; meanwhile, the other two challenges are waiting in this blog.
